Surprise's new smoothie bar has a coffee-shop feel

AAt a new smoothie bar in Surprise, customers can play Parker Brothers' Monopoly or the card game Uno while waiting for their frothy, fruity drinks.

Surprise residents Chris and Christina Erlandsen opened Arizona's first Squeeze fresh smoothies franchise last week at 13732 W. Bell Road in the Surprise Towne Center shopping complex.

The Erlandsens also bought the franchise development rights for Maricopa County, Flagstaff and Apache Junction.

The couple was first attracted to Squeeze when visiting its smoothie bars in Colorado. Christina said she was impressed with the outlets' coffee shop-like feel, and thought that the concept would fare well in Arizona where she said the heat makes it smoothie season year-round.

Similar to a coffee shop, Squeeze has sofa chairs and couches, a TV, free wireless Internet access and childhood board games like Milton Bradley's Operation.

The pair is hoping customers will soon treat the outlet like a local coffee shop as well.

"I think there are a lot of people who'd rather get a smoothie in the morning than the typical coffee," Christina said.

For that reason, the shop opens at 6:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, she added.

Squeeze's drinks contain roughly three to five servings of fruit, and range in price from $3.35 to $5.75 each, according to the company.

The Erlandsens plan to open another Squeeze in Goodyear or Phoenix, and eventually hope to open 15 of the shops across the state within the next five years.

"Our goal is to grow the brand and sell the franchise," Christina said..

Orange costs tough to swallow
Bitter Harvest: Storms thin crop
By Kristi Arellano, Denver Post Staff Writer

March 8, 2007

A growing squeeze on citrus supplies nationwide is driving up prices on everything from fresh oranges to orange juice to smoothies.

Grocers in Colorado say prices for oranges and orange juice are steadily rising, while many juice and smoothie retailers have implemented surcharges ranging from 25 to 65 cents on some items to offset the rising cost of oranges.

But there's more to it.

Greenwood Village-based Squeeze, founded by former Quiznos Seattle-area director Richard Dean, is one of a growing number of companies that are franchising for faster growth.

Most recently, the company signed deals to open 75 more of the smoothie shops in Arizona and California over the next seven years.
